Recent Activities[2022-2023]:

  • The Department of Biotechnology and Biochemistry organized a Student development Program on “Clinical Applications of PCR” on 17.02.2023 at the UG Biotech Lab at 10.00 am. Mr. Vinith T K, Product Manager-Molecular Biology and Mr. Ponbarani, Sr. Manager were the resource persons. They explained about the principles of PCR and the importance of PCR in analyzing clinical data. They also demonstrated how the analysis is done by PCR using the clinical samples they had brought with them. The students were able to gather information about the procedures and process, handling of samples and operating the PCR machine.


Recent Activities[2021-2022]:

  • The Department of Biotechnology, Sree Narayana Guru College celebrated on National Science Day on 28-02-2022, 10.30 AM. Resource Person: Dr. V. Shanmugaraju, Principal, ES Arts and Science College, Villupuram.

  • The Department of Biotechnology, Sree Narayana Guru College organized a webinar on “Intermittent Fasting and Metabolic Switching – Translational Research”. Resource Person: Dr. R. Gayathri, Associate Professor, Dept of Biochemistry, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai.

  • The Department of Biotechnology is organized a Webinar on “Public Order and Communal Harmony” in Connection with National Communal harmony Week.
    Date: 27.11.2021, Time: 6 PM. Resource Person: Mr. C. Paventhan, Advocate and Member of Thozhar Satta Maiyam, Coimbatore.

  • Extension Activity on 12-11-21 at Panchayat Middle School, CG Pudur, CBE.

  • The Department of Biotechnology and Human Rights Cell jointly organized a Training Programme on “Human Rights for Students” on 05.09.2021 via Google Meet at 10.00 am. The programme began with Welcome address by Dr. S. Geethalakshmi, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology and Coordinator, Human Rights Cell, SNGC.
    SESSION 1: The first session of the training was handled by Mr. Rajamanikam, Advocate, Coimbatore. In his speech, he highlighted about the basic human rights, need for knowing these rights and how to apply them in our day to day life. He highlighted articles and Indian Constitutional laws which can be applied to our everyday life. He also highlighted the rules and regulations that every human has to follow on road, in education, career, family and day to day life.
    SESSION 2: The next session was handled by Ms. Kirthana, Advocate, Coimbatore. She discussed about the laws, rules and regulations that protect women and children like right to education, work, career, property and family rights. The resource persons expressed their happiness in sharing their expertise with younger generation. The students felt the programme very useful and the feedback from the students was encouraging. A total of 83 participants from various institutions took part and got enlightened. To conclude, this training programme was a useful and successful event.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar in the Commemorative Lecture Series on 28.08.2021 at 10.00 am via Microsoft Teams. The Resource Person was Dr. Ullas Mony, Professor, Centre for Molecular Medicine and Diagnosis, Saveetha Dental University, Chennai. He introduced about the latest research topic Molecular Medicine and explained its importance in current medical scenario. He also explained about Bed to bench back to bed, Sepsis and its diagnosis, detection and cure, Detection of sepsis in early stage using biomarkers HLA-DR, Non classical monocytes has potential in detecting sepsis post cardiac surgery, Prohibitin levels proteomic identification in MS patients lymphocytes, Minimal Residual Disease, Stem Cells and its types, Immunophenotyping in Acute Leukemia, Personalized Medicine, Acute Myeloid Leukemia and its diagnosis Optimizing Invitro treatment of AML, Signalling pathways for inhibitors on LSPC Survival, Analysis of factors that affect invitro chemosensitivity of LSPC to Mylotarg drug in AML, Micro Nanofibres of scaffolds of Polyurethane usage for drug screening in bone marrow lesions, Hereditary Spherocytosis detection and diagnosis, Induced Pluripotent stem cells and its applications. Around 80 participants took part and got benefitted.

  • The Department of Biotechnology, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell & Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of SNGC organised the International Level Workshop on “IPR in Life Science” on 31.07.2021 at 11.00 AM through Google Meet App. Ms. Isha Sharma, Director, Trayambak Overseas Pvt Ltd, London, was the Resource Person explained about What is Intellectual Prorperty?, Kinds of IP, Types, What is Trademark, Qualities of Trademark, Trademark Classifications and Registration Process, Forms, Duration and Fees of Trademark, Patent and Registration Process, Applications for Patents, PCT Application, Filing process, Trade Secrets, Infringement, IP Valuation. Around 100 participants acitively participated and got benefited.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized An online Workshop on “Biotechnological Strategies in COVID Anlaysis” on 21.07.2021 via Google Meet at 10:30 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. S. Vijayakumar, Research Associate, VJ Biotech, Coimbatore. The resource person explained what is meant by pandemic, the characteristics of viruses causing the pandemic, the WHO guidelines for handling the situation, the principle and performance of RT-PCR test for identifying COVID, the methods of sample collection, the genes that are identified by RT-PCR which will give positive results, the treatment methods and drug used for treating various levels of infection, the principle of vaccination, the role of RNA interference technique in vaccine development, the procedures for testing the vaccine and its marketing strategies. It was an extensive lecture which highlighted every details of the current COVID situation.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a Student Development Program on “Microbial and Plant Forensic Investigation Methodology” on 18.07.2021 via Google Meet at 10:30 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. V. Vijay, Research Associate, Bioxplora R & D, Coimbatore. Dr. S. Geethalakshmi, Associate Professor and Head welcomed the participants and introduced the chief guest. The resource person gave the introduction about microbial forensics and plant forensics, the role of the sciences in crime investigation, the PCR methods used in these forensic analysis, the importance of metagenomics and metatranscriptomics in identifying the root cause of identification, metabolic pathway analysis and proteomics role in detecting the presence of variants in samples. He also emphasized on the Indian scenario of microbial forensics and the career opportunities available in India both in Government and private sectors.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar on “ Current Approaches in Cellulosic Ethanol Production” on 04.07.2021 via Google Meet at 11.00 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. P. Thirumalai Vasan, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, Srimad Andavar Arts and Science College, Trichy. The resource person spoke about the current methods of ethanol production, advanced techniques using genetic engineering in microbes for ethanol production, the environmental aspects to be considered for increase in production, use of lignocellulosic material for production and its applications.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar on “Food and Mood” on 28.06.2021 via Google Meet at 10:30 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. M. Poongothai, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Dr. NGP Arts and Science College, Coimbatore.

    Activities[2020-2021]:

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a Sree Narayana Guru Endowment Lecture Series webinar on “ Waste Management systems towards a Greener Environment” on 11.02.2021 via Microsoft Teams at 2.00 pm. The Chief Guest was Dr. SHANKAR CONGEEVARAM, CEO & Vice President, Tamil Nadu Integrated Waste Management Association. The resource person spoke about the How to waste generated in house and Industrial side and mange the waste towards a greener way. The lecture was full of information and interesting things in waste generation and reuses the materials. Around 72 participants from our institution and different institutions participated and got benefitted.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a Training Programme on “Human Rights for Students” on 28.01.2021 via Google Meet at 11.00 am. The programme began with Welcome address by Dr. S. Geethalakshmi, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, SNGC.

  • The Department of Biotechnology and IPR Cell jointly organized a webinar on “Patenting in Biotechnology: Indian Perspective” on 21.11.2020 via Google Meet at 11:00 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. Lakshmi, Professor and Dean i/c, Chettinad School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education, Chennai.
    Mr. C. M. Mukundan, Assistant Professor welcomed the participants and introduced the chief guest. The resource person spoke about the procedure of filing patent in India, the materials that can be patented in Life Science stream, the requirements for filing a patent and points to remember when filing patent. The participants interacted well with the resource person. Around 90 participants from 44 different institutions participated and got benefitted.
  • The Department of Biotechnology inaugurated its Association “Integrins” on 19.09.2020 via Google Meet at 02:30 pm. Dr. P. Sivaperumal, Assistant Professor, Saveetha University, Chennai was the chief guest. The chief guest gave a lecture on the topic “Importance of Marine Ecological Studies for Biotechnological Applications”. In his talk, he explained the different areas of marine environment from which samples can be collected, culturing and handling methods of the samples, extraction of pharmaceutically important components from the marine lives, their characterization and applications.
  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar on “Marine Chitosan-A Rationale in Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Environmental Applications” on 19.08.2020 via Google Meet at 10:30 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. Saravanan Ramachandran, Associate Professor, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Chettinad Academy of Research and Education, Chennai. The resource person spoke about the procedure of isolation of Chitosan from marine wastes, the protocols for processing the chitosan to acclimatize to human system, the effect of isolated chitosan on neurotoxic studies in zebra fish model and applications of chitosan in environmental cleaning of heavy metals, oil spills and other bioremediation applications. The participants interacted well with the resource person.
  • The Department of Biotechnology organized an International webinar on “Protein Engineering and its Biotechnological Applications” on 25.07.2020 at 10:30 am via Zoom. The Chief Guest was Dr. Govindan Raghunathan, Post Doctoral Fellow, Toulouse Biotechnology Institute, France. Around 40 participants from 16 different institutions participated and got benefitted.
  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar on ” Virtual Screening and Protein Drug Interction Analysis” on 27.06.2020. The chief guest was Dr A. Mohanapriya, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. She discussed about the steps involved in drug designing and steps in docking analysis. She also explained about the procedure and tools used for virtual Screening of the target and drug analysis. The participants were very interactive.

    IPR CELL

    The IPR Cell and Department of Biotechnology jointly organized a workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights and Issues” on 25.05.2020 via Google Meet at 11:00 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. S. Mohandass, Associate Professor and Head (SF), Department of Biochemistry, PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. The resource person spoke about the types of Intellectual Properties, the laws for protecting the intangible properties, the products that can be patented, other IPs which can be used to protect our work, the infringement details and how to overcome the infringement. The participants interacted well with the chief guest, asked many questions and gathered lot of ideas for protecting their research work. Around 86 participants from 32 different institutions participated and got benefited.

  • The Department of Biotechnology organized a webinar on “Role of Probiotics in Regulating the Immune System” on 14.05.2020 via Google Meet at 11:30 am. The Chief Guest was Dr. S. Padmavathy, Assistant Professor in Microbiology, Department of Zoology and Microbiology, Thiagarajar College, Madurai. Around 90 participants from 24 different institutions participated and got benefitted.
  • The Department of Biotechnology organized the Valediction of its Association “INTEGRINS” on 26-02-2020, 2 PM. Venue: Conference Hall. Chief Guest: Dr. A. Anitha, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Nehru Arts and Science College, Coimbatore. She gave a lecture on the topic “A Journey from Indian Mythology to Modern Technology”. In her talk, she explained the concepts of Indian traditional practices and its correlation with the concept of science. Taking the examples from Ramayana, Mahabharatha and other epics, she explained the notion of invitro fertilization, live telecast, xenograft, digital vision and other modern technology.
  • Dept. Of Biotechnology, SNGC organized a One Day International Conference on Current Trends in Biotechnology on 05.02.2020. Around 89 participants from different colleges participated and presented posters. Chief Guest: Dr. P. Rajiv, Post Doctoral Fellow, Nanjing Agriculture University, China. Guests of Honour: Dr. Senthilkumar, Rayalaseema University and Dr Saravanan from Chettinad University. Best posters were awarded.

  • Organized Alumni Guest Lecture and Career Guidance Program on 28-9-2019. Dr. K. Rijesh, Chief Technical Officer, C-6 Labs, Cochin and Mr. Vineeth Vasu, Senior Manager, Basil Biosolutions, Bangalore were the Chief Guest.
